Packing for a business trip within Japan

A domestic business trip in Japan needs four groups of items: work tools, documents and valuables, clothes, and toiletries. Convenience stores and hotel amenities cover a lot here, so packing light is the right call. When in doubt, ask yourself "can I buy this locally?" - if yes, leave it at home.

What you cannot buy locally is what you must never forget: business cards, your company ID, presentation materials, regular medication, and everything related to charging. Charging cables and power banks are the classic forgotten items - check them off the night before you leave.

For overnight trips, pack one more shirt and set of underwear than the number of nights, so a spill or a sweaty day never becomes a problem. Compression bags keep bulky clothes small enough for a single bag. Still choosing a bag? See our business bag, backpack and suitcase comparison.

For when to start preparing and what to do each day, the trip prep schedule checklist walks you from one week out to departure day.

Frequently asked questions

How big a bag do I need for a one-night business trip?

A business backpack or a bag around 20L is enough. With compression bags you can skip the suitcase entirely.

How many spare shirts should I bring?

Number of nights plus one is the rule of thumb. Add one more in hot seasons or for trips with many dinners.

Can I skip things the hotel provides?

Most Japanese business hotels provide toothbrushes, towels and hair dryers. Only bring your own if you are particular about them.

What do business travelers forget most often?

Charging cables, power banks and restocking business cards. Check them against the list when you pack the night before.

What should I bring even on a day trip?

Business cards, materials, a power bank and a folding umbrella. The longer the travel time, the more the battery matters.

How do I keep my suit from wrinkling?

Fold the jacket inside out and hang it up as soon as you arrive. See our suit packing guide for the full method.
